U2 at the sphere with Yes Tech

Three different types of Yes Tech LED display modules helped to create a unique visual effect during U2’s first performance of “UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere”, last September in Las Vegas and scheduled to run until February of this year.

The minimalist design of the turntable-shaped stage featured a circular, 10-metre diameter Yes Tech LED floor resting on an even larger square platform!

During the 36 concerts of the legendary Irish rock band, different types of Yes Tech LED displays were used for the main stage, which was built on two levels in the shape of a record player, contributing to the success of U2’s opening performance at the MSG Sphere.

The venue is a huge, 112-metre high sphere designed to host performances, concerts and immersive events and capable of accommodating up to 18,600 people. It is probably the largest architectural masterpiece of its kind in existence!

The show featured, among other things, an internal wraparound LED screen with 16K resolution (the largest in the world) and speakers employing beam-forming technology. The band’s technical/creative team faced many challenges during the conception and production of this incredible show, and the fact that Yes Tech contributed to the stage on which U2 performed is a source of pride not only for the manufacturer but also for us at Audio Effetti.

The LED floor used on the stage is made up of the Yes Tech MG7S, MG15 and MG11 models in a structure borrowed from Brian Eno’s artwork “Turntable”, reminiscent of the shape of a phonograph.

For the platform, the MG7S P3.9 displays with 50×50 cm square cabinets were used, while for the turntable platter no less than 268 MG7S P3.9 and 24 MG15 P3.9 units customised to suit the design. The same goes for the MG11s.

It’s worth pointing out that the standard version of the MG15 and MG11 have rectangular cabinets measuring 25×50 cm and 12.5×50 cm respectively.

The use of the MG7S for LED floors, as in this case, is quite common, given its ability to withstand a load of 800 kg/0.03 m2. In other words, it means that it can support a car weighing three tonnes without damage!
